Graffiti is a uniquely American-born art form now practiced and appreciated all over the world. Graffiti did not begin as an art form at all, but as a form of communication and a game among urban teenagers. But through their persistence and creativity, early graffiti writers developed an entirely new and separate art form based on their independent understanding and expression of style, which they actualized by inventing new artistic tools and techniques.
Since its inception, graffiti has been, and still is, outlawed in most places. And yet, millions of people avidly follow graffiti artists on social media, graffiti is now showcased in museums and galleries, it influences graphic design and fashion, and is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool to beautiful public spaces.
